Player Evaluation Lab

Interactive Prototype: The Player Profile Spider Diagram

This is an early visual concept from The Seed Report’s player evaluation work.

The idea is simple:

A player is not just a score. A player is a shape.

The spider diagram below compares a baseline player profile against an adjusted profile. Move the sliders to see how changes in specific traits alter the overall shape of the player.

The purpose is not to predict a player’s future with certainty. The purpose is to ask better questions.

What happens if shot discipline improves?
What happens if defensive activity translates?
What happens if playmaking becomes a real strength?
What happens if efficiency changes in a new role?

This is a prototype, not a finished scouting model.

That is the point.

I am using this space to test ideas, invite feedback, and explore how data visualization can support better basketball conversations.

How to Use the Prototype

Start with the baseline player profile.

Then move one slider at a time.

Watch how the player’s shape changes.

The goal is not to create a perfect score. The goal is to see how different traits affect the profile.

Try asking:

  • What if this player becomes more disciplined as a shooter?
  • What if defensive production improves?
  • What if playmaking becomes a strength?
  • What if offensive efficiency rises but defensive impact stays flat?
  • What if the player has one elite trait but remains uneven elsewhere?

The shape may matter as much as the number.

What I’m Looking For

This prototype is still early.

I am especially interested in feedback from scouts, analysts, coaches, player-development people, basketball operations staff, and anyone who thinks seriously about player evaluation.

The questions I am working through include:

  • Are these the right categories?
  • What important traits are missing?
  • Should different positions have different profiles?
  • Should the model adjust for role, age, competition, or team context?
  • Which traits are most likely to translate from college to the next level?
  • Where could this visual be helpful?
  • Where could it be misleading?

This is not meant to replace scouting or film.

It is meant to start a better conversation between the numbers and the basketball people who know what they are seeing.
